Houston, We Have a Problem...

Hi, guys.  I'm still having problems with my internet connection.  We're trying out a VOIP phone service, and I think it's taking its toll.  I promise I'll have the pieces up again as soon as possible.

8/16/08 Intercessions - 19th OT

Today's piece is short and sweet, finishing out the week.  For some reason, this week's voice leading has been much easier, and I have no idea why.  Go figure!

8/15/08 Magnificat - 19th OT

How fitting that today's piece, on the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, should be the Magnificat!  Happy feast day, everyone!

8/13/08 Canticle - 19th OT

I am very sorry for the gap in posting.  I've been having trouble getting a constant internet connection on my laptop for the past couple of days, and as such I've been unable to post the music that I've written.  I have written music for every day, however, so I'll be updating the site over the next few days until things are running smoothly again.  Look for updated visitors maps, as well!

8/7/08 Responsory - 18th OT

I think the layout is self-explanatory here.  Just in case it isn't, however, I'll explain.  The first versicle and response each get a measure.  The second pair gets the same two measures.  Then, the doxology gets the next two measures, with the response getting the same two measures as before.  Man, will this be easier when I can just write out the lyrics.

8/2/08 Intercessions - 17th OT

Happy Breviary Day!  OK, so there's no such thing as Breviary Day.  It's what I like to call the day when you change volumes of the Breviary.  Tonight we say Evening Prayer I of the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, and thus need to switch to Volume IV.  So Happy Breviary Day, everyone, and here's the piece for today.

7/31/08 Responsory - 17th OT

Each pair of versicles except the second can be divided into two parts and assigned to a measure of music.  So if the first measure is A and the second B, the layout would be as follows:

V. A, B
R. A, B

V. A,
R. B

V. A, B
R. A, B

If that's confusing, see the measure layout on this piece.

7/30/08 Canticle - 17th OT

Kudos to the first person who can tell me what the last two chords in the piece theoretically constitute and name a relatively well-known piece of music that has one (Hint: There's one in Handel's "Messiah," but you'll have to say which part).

7/29/08 Second Psalm - 17th OT

Same format as the rest of the week.  Today, I experimented by using different voicing within the same essential chord structure.  The only difference in structure between the first and second halves of the verses is the tonality of the I/i chord in the first measure, as you'll see below.

7/28/08 First Psalm - 17th OT

It feels so good to be caught up online!  Hopefully, it will be a long time before I'm that long without internet access again.  That way, I can keep posting once per day and not pile up too much work on myself :)  That being said, here's today's piece.

7/27/08 Versicles - 17th OT

It's going to be hard to follow yesterday's piece, but there are still just under 300 days left to do, so I need to get to work.  This week marks the first compositions in a minor key in a while, so that should provide variety :)

7/26/08 Intercessions - 16th OT

As stated on the piece itself, this has been dedicated to Kateri Tiller by her family, on the occasion of her birthday.  The Tiller's are wonderful performers and supporters of genuine liturgical music, and this project is fortunate to have their support.  This piece was made even more special because it was performed by myself and the Tiller family on July 27, 2008, marking the first performance of a Canticum Quotidianum piece!  Altogether, it made for a very meaningful dedication, which Kateri definitely deserves.  Happy Birthday, Kateri!

Delay

Hello, everyone!  I am very sorry for the long delay in posts.  I have NOT given up this project, and I've been faithfully writing a song a day.  However, I've been without sufficient internet access to be able to post for over a week.  I will be working on getting everything posted this week, and I have good news:  Not only have I found a way to post the previous entries under their correct dates and times, but I've also recorded the approximate times I finished each piece.  That means that I can post each piece at roughly the time I would have been able to do so if I'd had internet access at the time, which will help in archiving and organizational matters.  Thank you for both your patience and your continued support.

7/6/08 Versicles - 14th OT

This week is reminiscent of fauxbordon, in that everything on the whole note is chanted, and everything in a measure with stems is counted rhythmically.

Happy Independence Day!  Three-line stanzas should skip the third recitation measure.  Two-line stanzas should be paired into four-line stanzas.

7/3/08 Responsory - 13th OT

This one's going to be a bit complicated.  Basically, if the notes don't have stems, they're recitation notes.  If they do, they're metrical.  And the fifth measure (with the single quarter note) is a metrical pickup to the sixth.  However, the whole thing should be relatively free in terms of meter.

Obviously, this is structured like the Responsories: First part is repeated, second part contains the second half of the first part.  Then Gloria Patri, then the first part again.

I'm going to go ahead and assume that the opening and closing versicles, being in such common use and knowledge, are public domain.  I just pray it doesn't turn into another "Happy Birthday" situation.  Still no news on permission to use the other text.

6/25/08 Canticle - 12th OT

I desperately need your prayers for this blog.  I just found out today that, technically, I'm not supposed to be putting the texts for these songs on the internet because they are copyrighted.  I just assumed that because they were all liturgical, one could use them for whatever he pleased.  Well, apparently the translations are all copyrighted, so I have to obtain permission from three different agencies in order to even use the text.  That means that I also can't copyright my settings of these texts—literally just the music on the page.  So pray for me as I write these corporations, that they will realize that I'm not doing this for profit and let me use the texts.

Adam
